Gilding is an art technique used to decorate wood, metal, fresco, glass, ceramics and other objects with gold leaf. The term also embraces the application of silver and gold alloys.
Gold Leaf is an extremely thin sheet of gold alloy, about 0.1 micrometre thick and used for gilding. Medieval illuminated manuscripts gleam with gold leaf used by ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Greeks and Romans and it is still widely used for gilding today.
The six years residing in the Northen Territory has overwhelmed me with it’s calm landscapes and relaxed way of living. The denotation to the phrase ‘Silence is Golden’ struck me that the Top End is a precious jewel in itself. It inspired me to depict it’s astonishing landscapes in clay based relief work, finished with Gold and Silver leaf. Also known as Gilding.
This is a technique I’ve enjoyed doing for the past ten years and applied it in many forms. Teaching this technique has given many students the joy of a new skill.
